Coaching Tool: Rocking Chair Exercise

Writer's picture: Sana ZSana Z

This is a great exercise to figure out what you need to have in place to feel you had a life of little (or no) regrets.

Give yourself 20 minutes of quiet time to answer the following questions. Writing them down will help you give life to your vision. You might want to record yourself reading the guided visualisation below. There is no right or wrong answer, just let your imagination flow...

You are blissfully happy and healthy AND 90 years old. You’re sitting somewhere, maybe in your rocking chair and looking back over your IDEAL life.

  • What would give you the deepest sense of satisfaction and contentment? What made your life meaningful?

  • If those remaining years were really precious, what would they include? What values did your life embody that gave your life meaning and satisfaction?

  • Who are you as a person?

  • What is it about you that people really value ?

  • Who can you see around you? What can you hear? What shows you you’re truly happy?

  • What are you proud of?

  • Who did you prioritize?

  • What really matters to you?

  • Consider: How did your life unfold in the following areas: Family, Friends, Significant Other, Career, Health (emotional, spiritual and physical), your Home, what did you do for Fun and Leisure, what did you Learn about, what did you Serve?

  • BONUS: That deadline you’re worrying about right now, that argument with your co-worker, the hot guy/woman who didn’t pay much attention to you, will you remember them when you’re 90 years old on that rocking chair?
